National Marine Aquarium celebrates success at Devon Tourism Awards

The National Marine Aquarium is celebrating after a successful evening at the Devon Tourism Awards last night (10 November). The Aquarium was shortlisted in three categories, and scooped the Gold award for Sustainable Tourism, Silver award for Access and Inclusivity, and another Silver award for Venue and Business Tourism.

The evening was topped off when the National Marine Aquarium was honoured with the Winner of Winners award. In addition, having secured a Gold award for its approach to sustainable tourism, the Aquarium will progress to the South West Tourism Awards, where it will be among other regional winners of the Sustainable Tourism award category.

Now in its seventh year, the Devon Tourism Awards celebrate the leading lights in the tourism industry across Devon, which help to ensure the county continues to be one of the UK’s most popular holiday destinations. 75 finalists were invited to attend a prestigious awards ceremony in the Great Hall at Exeter University and hosted by Radio Exe presenter Judi Spiers, where the winners across the 24 categories were announced.

Mark Du'chesne, General Manager at the National Marine Aquarium, commented: “We are delighted to have won four awards at last night’s Devon Tourism Awards. The awards celebrate the best that the tourism sector in Devon has to offer and we are very proud to be shortlisted across three categories. To have walked away with two silvers and a gold award is a fantastic result. As an organisation that is committed to driving marine conservation through education, operating a sustainable business is at the heart of everything we do, so we are delighted to have been awarded a Gold accolade in the Sustainable Tourism category, and it also means we will now compete in the Southwest Tourism Awards in the category. To top it all off, we also won the Winner of Winners award!

“Our success in the awards is testament to the hard work and commitment of the team here at the National Marine Aquarium and we thank each and every one of them for their support and dedication. We’re proud of the reputation the Aquarium has for being a popular tourist attraction and a centre for excellence in marine education, research and conservation.”

The awards, which saw entries from across 155 major businesses in the county, are judged by an independent panel of past winners, industry leaders and experts in their fields. Businesses that are successful in the Devon Tourism Awards are fast-tracked into the South West Tourism Excellence Awards in February 2017 and nominees are invited to represent Devon in the National Visit England Awards later in 2017.
