Make the Most of Devon this Half Term!

Devon’s Top Attractions have plenty to keep the children happy this May/June Half Term with a huge variety of special events and activities planned, going on right across Devon.  At more than 40 of Devon’s top visitor attractions there will be an abundance of family fun taking place.

Get ready to set foot in a world set 160 million years ago! Visit Woodlands Family Adventure Park over half term week and encounter dinosaurs in their natural habitat in their brand new dinosaur attraction called Dino Trek.  Embark on an expedition and get up close and personal with these mesmerising creatures and hear them ROAR! The grand opening will be on 31st May.

The Big Sheep in North Devon have a ‘Superhero Weekend’ on 28th -30th May. With FREE entry for any child dressed as their favourite super hero character. Have your picture taken with the Batmobile, a half size replica of the original car used in the 1989 movie. Spiderman will be there too and will make special appearances throughout the weekend.

There’s lots more character fun going on at the Milky Way Adventure Park in North Devon too. On Sunday 29th May Mikey and Donnie from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will be at the park and on 4th June Chase from Paw Patrol will be there waiting to meet all his excited fans.

For all those who are seeking fresh air and exercise this half term, head over to Killerton and enjoy the wild open spaces, the tree swings, den building and finding the bear’s hut. Round up the family, join the rangers and find your adventurous side at ‘Wild about Killerton’ day on 4th June. You can also get more fresh air out at Castle Drogo where you can enjoy ’Meeting the Builders’.  Follow the trail around the garden and find out about the builders who are saving the castle.

There’s an all-inclusive half term on offer at Becky Falls with a prize for children who complete the letterboxing trail as well as lots of hands-on animal activities. From cute and cuddly to snakes and lizards as well as meeting the meerkats. There’s more letterboxing fun out at the Miniature Pony Centre 30th May – 3rd June, if you collect all the stamps hidden around the Centre you will be rewarded with a prize.

Join the ‘Half Term Potting Frenzy’ at Canonteign Falls, get ahead with your planting. Grab a pot, a handful of soil and a seed, give it some water, take it home and watch it grow. For all those budding explorers why not join the underground fossil trail, it’s on all half term week at Kents Cavern as part of the 2016 Geopark Festival Week.

There are some ‘Ancient Egypt’ activities going on at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum on 28th May. Learn about life and death in ancient Egypt, join the scribe school and learn how to write in hieroglyphs.  Also on 31st May they have some pre-school fun with their ‘Little Explorers’, a journey of discovery where the under-fives can make some collection inspired creations.

‘Wonderland Week’ is back at Powderham Castle on 30th May – 5th June, don’t be late to see the topsy-turvy tea party as Alice takes a trip down the rabbit hole to meet the characters of Wonderland. 

Shiver me timbers, its ‘Pirate Week’ on 30th May – 5th June at World of Country Life, with lots of swashbuckling fun and pirate themed activities for all the family to enjoy.  And there’s a week of non-stop family fun at Pennywell Farm with ‘Circus Saturday’ on 4th June plus a Big Show twice daily with top class international performers like Dan the Hat, Mr Phil, Elfic the Jester and Poco Drum and not forgetting all the usual favourite farmyard fun.

Everyone loves a teddy bears picnic and there’s one on Friday 3rd June at South Devon Railway, bring your favourite teddy for a picnic on the train. There’s more picnic family fun going on at River Dart Country Park on Sunday 5th June. Enjoy their annual picnic at the park - it looks like being their biggest ever yet as they are celebrating 40 years of family fun.

Let’s not forget that the adults like to have some fun too. South Devon Railway have their ‘Traction Weekend and Spring Ale Festival’ on 27th -30th May. A return to the sixties with steam and heritage services all day and into the evening. In East Devon on the 27th May Seaton Tramway have an evening of comedy and calamities where the Moonstone Theatre Company present an evening with ‘Dad’s Army’. Tickets include tram ticket, entertainment and a two course meal.

Don’t miss the ‘Classic and Vintage Vehicle Rally’ out at Pecorama on Sunday 29th May.  With over 160 vehicles that have travelled from far afield to come to this popular event. Pecorama also have their Heritage Steam Weekend on 4th-5th June with an eclectic display of full and small scale traction engines and some guest locomotives.
