Lynton & Lynmouth Celebrate 126 year Anniversary

This years sees Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway celebrate their 126 Years anniversary. It was on 7th April, 1890 that the Lynton & Lynmouth Cliff Railway made its first journey after only a three year construction period. The Cliff Railway was designed by George Marks, funded by Sir George Newnes and built by local man Bob Jones.

The Lynton & Lynmouth Cliff Company was formed by an Act of Parliament in 1888 and gave the company perpetual rights to water from the Lyn Valley (the railways only power source). The railway has been in operation ever since, even during both world wars.

This picture, taken just before the opening, shows (from left to right) Chief Engineer Bob Jones, Chairman Sir George Newnes and Driver C.A. Andrews.
