Devon's Top Attractions Celebrate Landmark Year

The Devon Association of Tourist Attractions celebrated 30 years in business this week at an event hosted at Pennywell Farm.  Many members of the top 40 attractions gathered to celebrate 3 decades of continued hard work within the tourism industry.

DATA represents 40 of Devon’s best visitor attractions. To become a member a tourist attraction has to go through a tough inspection process and meet extremely high quality standards. They are then inspected on a regular basis to make sure these quality standards are maintained.

Some of the founder members are still members today and include River Dart Country Park, Dartington Crystal, Powderham Castle, Quince Honey Farm, Exmoor Zoo, Watermouth Castle and Bicton Park. In the early years there were as few as 10-15 members but this quickly rose in the late eighties to around its current number of 40 members.

Chairman - Simon Fishwick cuts the cake.

DATA was set up to act as a unified voice within the tourism industry for its members and to raise and maintain quality standards at its attractions. To publish an annual joint members leaflet for mutual promotion of all members and to produce a joint website.  ‘The Complete Guide to Devon’ brochure has stood the test of time and today is the largest and most useful distributed tourism leaflet across the whole of Devon with a huge 1.2 million annual distribution. This guide not only provides mutual promotion for the attractions but also a free road map, beach guide and tide tables.

Nearly 5 million people visit the top attractions each season, generating in excess of £50,000,000, bringing local employment and boosting Devon’s economy. This year Devon’s Top Attractions have been touring the country and have represented Devon at all of the main Travel Trade Shows promoting Devon to the overseas and UK domestic market.

Simon Fishwick chairman said “As an Association we continue to move forward and work together to promote Devon’s Tourism”. He said “It’s good to know that our fundamental aims are still as important to us today as 30 years ago”.

As part of the their 30th year celebrations they are currently running a big ticket giveaway competition to WIN 30 family tickets, one for each year since DATA was established. There’s still time to enter on their website until 30th June at www.lotstodo.co.uk.
