South Devon Railway
If you are looking for a great day out in Glorious Devon, then head to the South Devon Railway, which runs Great Western Railway steam trains between Buckfastleigh and Totnes. The line hugs the beautiful River Dart for virtually the whole of the line's seven mile length.
There is plenty to do for all ages too. At Buckfastleigh, there's a picnic area and riverside walk, a fascinating museum, refreshment rooms, gift shop and, if you ever wanted to see how they rebuild steam locomotives, let alone see a 700 ton press, head to the viewing gallery above the railway's amazing workshops.
Take the train to sleepy Staverton, then on to Totnes, where the railway built its station from buildings from all over the old GWR's system. It's a 500 yard walk from there over the bridge to the main line railway station.
There are great value 3 Great Attractions, 1 Amazing Day joint tickets with the Totnes Rare Breeds Farm and Dartmoor Otters & Buckfast Butterflies.
You'll be made extremely welcome!
Yes, dog friendly. Dogs are welcome on a lead and charged at £1 each.
The railway is open from Easter to October, then again over the Christmas period. There are three trains a day in each direction between Buckfastleigh and Totnes, with six trains each way during the peak season. All the times are in the timetable section of the website, or you can pick up a leaflet from leaflet racks all over the West Country.
There is plenty of free parking at Buckfastleigh station, which is just off the A38, midway between Exeter and Plymouth: follow the brown signs.
If you are coming by train, Totnes main line station is a walk of about 500 yards from the SDR's station.
Buckfastleigh and Totnes (main line) stations are both served by bus routes from several local towns.
